Greece Tectonic Plates: Week 2
For this week in my blog post I’ll be exploring Plate Tectonics and the importance of knowing plate boundaries at that location. As you guys are aware my country is Greece and with a little research I was able to find out that the tectonic plate for Greece is called “The Aegean Sea Plate” which can also be referred as either Hellenic plate or Aegean plate. The Tectonic plate in Greece is located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea which tends to locate under Southern Greece as well as Western Turkey! If you weren’t already aware, Greece is tectonically active but why? Well, for instance earthquakes are related to the convergent plate boundary which then tends to span the boundary of Southern Greece. I also learned that although earthquakes are common in Greece the most common earthquakes tend to occur in the Gulf of Corinth where it’s the most seismically active! The three main plates are; Eurasia, Aegean Sea, and the African Plate. I found it interesting to learn that the Aegean plate goes at about 37mm. Volcanoes on the other hand are super common as well due to the interaction between both the Eurasia and the African plates causing what is called a Hellenic Volcanic Arc.

Interesting tectonic background. Can you also please add your sources of information here?
ReplyDeleteLooking forward for more information about hose earthquakes next week!
thank you for adding those links!
DeleteHello Maritza,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing about Greece I actually learned something new about how the earthquakes occur in that country now.
