Week 13: Coastal Erosion
For this week I will be discussing coastal erosion. For starters what exactly is this and what effect does it have on Greece? Well, coastal erosion is the process in which local sea level rises causing strong wave action and typically leads coastal flooding that causes rocks and soil to wear down. So what causes this? This is typically caused by various reasons some including the following; hydraulic action, corrosion by wind & water, and even abrasion.
I think every country has a possibility of being affected by coastal erosion but depending on the country others are far more impacted depending on the location and circumstances. My country is Greece which is what I will be further explaining for this week and the effects/impact it has on Greece. Due to coastal erosion Greece has been severely impacted causing a massive amount of wreckage in nearly a third of Greek beaches. Greeces’ coastline tends to be 15,000 km long being 60% mainland and the rest of it being 40% just islands. Due to sea level increasing due to the circumstances the beaches sustainability will be questioned due to beach erosion increase.
A project called “The Space For Shore” project provides various materials for specifically coastal erosion monitoring this is used by Earths observations. According to the article, “Monitoring coastal changes in Greece,” it states “ The results highlight the fragility of Greece's coastline and indicate the likelihood of coastal erosion increasing in the coming years. Over the 1995—2020 period, around 40% of the coastlines analyzed have shown 'progradation' which is the seaward growth of beaches caused by the progressive build-up of sediment. The team found that nearly 10% of the studied coastal areas are subject to erosion greater than 3 m per year.” (Pg. 3). Meaning that due to the studies being made it has shown researchers that 10% of the overall studied costal areas have been subjected to erosion and is greater than 3m per year which means Greeces’ beaches are subjected to being impacted.

Great coastal reflection!- Looking forward to the connection with climate.
ReplyDeleteHi Maritza, I like how much in detail you went to explain the different types of coastal erosions in Greece. It's great that there's a project that is monitoring these erosions so that they can find a way to limit or predict Greece's coastal beaches from being impacted. Do you think because of the rate of 3m per year that Greece's beaches can be gone by 2100? Thank you so much and great post!
